Yes Anything Could Happen

It’s been a few days now since I went to the barber shop to get my monthly cut. While waiting “Inc.” magazine with a Twitter headline caught my eye and since my number one hate is wasting time I decided to have a read.

Initially when I picked the magazine up I was actually thinking it was a tech related magazine but in fact it is designed for the entrepreneur. I was so impressed with my read and the overall material I decided to pay for a subscription which was only $9.97 for twelve issues.

Yes, I know you can read thousands of websites for free on such material but there is just something about picking up a magazine and a cup of coffee and having a great read wherever the place may be at the time.

I’ve read the magazine from front to back now and the article that has moved me per say the most is the one about Evan Williams the founder of blogger that struggled his way uphill and eventually sold and made $50 million from Google. The funny thing is I’ve never actually looked into blogger’s background even though I am a techie and user of two years.

I since have explored William’s blog EvHead to read his mentioned post on “Ten Rules for Web Startups” which has become something of an internet standard and what he considers to be one of his best blog posts of all time.

Six important aspects I gained from his post:

1. Focus on the smallest possible problem you could solve that would potentially be useful.
2. Ideas are in the air. There are lots of people thinking about—and probably working on—the same thing you are. And one of them is Google. Deal with it.
3. One of Google’s biggest strengths—and sources of frustration for outsiders—was their willingness to say no to opportunities, easy money, potential employees, and deals.
4. User experience is everything.
5. Create something you want to exist in the world.
6. Yes, high levels of commitment are crucial.

Another article I found to be equaling as compelling was “How to Evaluate New Product Idea

1. Tractability is partially about technical difficulty and much about timing and competition.
2. Is it clear why people should use it?
3. The most successful products give benefits quickly.
4. How many people may ultimately use it?
5. How hard will it be to extract the money?
6. Do you really want it to exist in the world?

What have I learned like any other net savvy person that is always looking for the next best idea on the net and “Yes Anything Can Happen” as long as the willingness to succeed is there!

One of Google’s biggest strengths—and sources of frustration for outsiders—was their willingness to say no to opportunities, easy money, potential employees, and deals….

that seems difficult especially with the internet climate as it is, so many companies offering this and that, if i was in the market i would go for any deal that came my way.. then again im looking to make 100,000 not one million

I know what you mean about sometimes wanting to read an actual magazine. I mostly use a couple methods. The free one- Barnes and Noble. Sometimes I will just take a couple hours out of the day and browse the bookstoore. As long as you aren’t time challenged you can site there and read entire business magazines or articles that look worthwhile. Of course they dont mind and there are people who spend their entire day there without buying anything.

Then there are discount subscriptions- they are everywhere, online, those ads you get at college bookstores, professional discounts, etc.

As an executive I am always getting offers for executive/pro discounts, especially from Wall Street Journal and Forbes. I dont remember what I paid for those but I think it was about 20% of the normal subscription price and of course I use it as a business expense.

  23. Kaile on May 2nd, 2008

I just ordered a few different magazine subscriptions myself. I do agree with you. There is something about reading a tangible magazine/newspaper in front of you. Magazine articles are normally very in depth too - where a lot of sites don’t go into as much detail at time.s

  24. Stefanie on May 2nd, 2008

I love that you can always turn to Inc for something entertaining and thought-provoking. I get mine at home, but somehow they always pile up because of other things that need to be done. Now I want to go home and read the articles you talked about, though.

I agree with you when you say there is something about sitting down with a magazine. The fact is when online reading articles, that half the articles you read are complete rubbish and written by amateurs. In a magazine there is always a sense of quality.

I agree with you, while the internet is an amazing tool, it’s hard to beat having a cold hard copy of a good read in your hand, kicking back and relaxing while learning something. I stare at a computer screen all day at work, it’s nice to break away from that once in a while.

Sometimes, magazines are better than websites. Instead of wasting your time waiting, reading a magazine that could give you some informations is better. That is a cheap subscription anyway.

  44. debster on May 7th, 2008

I agree that it is difficult to sometimes find the time to pick up a magazine instead of turning online. It feels almost hardcore if note retro this days. It must have been about ten years ago since I bought a printed publication but is so much greater in that you can keep it around, re-reading at leisure.
