Video Blogging The Next Step

What is video blogging?  Blogging + Video = Vlogs, Vlogging, Vlogger

Seems somewhat inevitable that video blogging has come to be the next step by bloggers that have endlessly hacked away at the keyboard post after post on every subject none on the net. Video blogging is definitely the next level (trend) of web self expression.

It was back in September that I redesigned this blog integrating the entertainment, forum and vLogs sections.  I have yet to find time to upload my first video blogging post but I have now decided to make an effort. So to get the vlogs section started check out our Vegas Skydive!

A video blog, sometimes shortened to vlog is a blog that comprises video. Regular entries are typically presented in reverse chronological order and often combine embedded video or a video link with supporting text, images, and other metadata.

Vlogs also often take advantage of web syndication to allow for the distribution of video over the Internet using either the R.S.S. or Atom syndication formats, for automatic aggregation and playback on mobile devices and personal computers (See video podcast). Though many vlogs are collaborative efforts, the majority of vlogs and vlog entries are authored by individuals. (Wikipedia)

Iterations of vlogs could include:

  • Informative Blogging
  • Amateur Films
  • Video Diary
  • Training On Anything
  • Artistic Expression
  • Documenting Many Choices
  • The Family
  • Your Favorite Blank

Video blogging has revolutionized the web as we know it giving the potential for anyone to self-publish and share it with the world.

“When you have Hollywood and major media as a filter, they’re going to do what appeals to millions rather than thousands,” Sharp said. “It’s just not cost-effective for them to produce a show about the didgeridoo (for example). That’s what the internet has changed — you can find stuff and market it ridiculously cheaply.”

Some vlog content is even making the leap to television!

Some critics out there voice their opinion and feel that blogs based around static images and the sometimes badly written word may have some problems making the move to the highly produced world of television.

I on the other hand I think that bloggers are doing an excellent job of making the transition successfully. Just to mention a few blogs to hit the TV market : TMZ.com, PerezHilton.com, The Smoking Gun and Blog TV.

Yes, it is true on the other hand technology sites such as; CNET TV, ZDTV and TechTV had a much harder time passing for TV media. Just stick blogging and vlogging and cross the TV bridge when they lower it and invite you over.

Is video blogging right for your site? I think it will give a great person touch to your site and with a little trail error it could possibly open the door to some great future success.

I wanted to view a video but was unable to do so because I don’t have a plug in. I turned off my fire wall and still no luck. Do you have any suggestions of what to do and what product I should use. My browser is FireFox

  2. Jason Neuman on November 2nd, 2007

The video is uploaded on YouTube. If you are able to watch videos on YouTube then you should be able to watch our video. There is nothing special to do to my knowledge.

  3. Paul from NewHomesSection on November 2nd, 2007

Yes, I am sorry for lack of clarity. I click on the link ‘”Clint Sharp” and it said that I do not have the appropriate plug in.

I can view the Vegas hosted by youtube.

    Again sorry for that

You need active x for his site, it should try and install it when you go to his site if you do not have a block activated.

  5. Ravi Singh on November 3rd, 2007

Yes Jason you are right he requires an ActiveX media plugin for his browser . If he is using firefox go ahead to mozilla site and grab a plugin or else he is using IE then as soon as he enters the site he must get a message to download plugin . He should click that and automatically plugin gets installed

This is certainly a good idea but friends stay away from those blogs that have become completely vlogs. I don’t see lot of juice in complete vlog sites, probably I am more “text content” person.

  7. Jason Neuman on November 3rd, 2007

I’m thinking the key with vlogging is to upload your vids to youtube and hope that people love it and then go to the URL address you put in the video. Maybe even like them enough to embed the vids into their sites.

  8. Music Dictionary on November 3rd, 2007

I too have serious doubts about the efficacy of vlogs. Not only because I am a text person, but I find that reading blogs, and if I so choose, going to a vlog through a video is a better choice as, I have control.

  9. HiFi Guy on November 3rd, 2007

I don’t like video blogging coz im not a native english speaker, so i can’t clearly understand what people are saying each time unless they put subtitle inside :p

Well if you are pretty or beautiful I don’t mind may be hearing and seeing your video bog. But on a serious note videos generally hog bandwidth so if you are on a slow internet connection like we have in Australia then you’re better off with text. Also you get more traffic to your blog with text then video as g**gle doesn’t read or crawl your videos.

  12. Fare Soldi on November 4th, 2007

I believe you need to find a balance, text and video 50%-50% is the best.

    Google loves test.
    Visitors loves videos.

The best is always in the middle. :D

Jake, I found your blog through technorati, it is awesome congratulations!

I have seen a few of these sites popping up. I think that if you have the right niche you could really take advantage of a vlog. Perhaps someone trying to make it in the comedy business or cartoons would best be suited with one.

once higher bandwidth is available worldwide and video camera is much cheaper…maybe high resolution video camera phone

  15. Paul from NewHomesSection on November 5th, 2007

Ravi - thank you for the help.

I don’t think that video will ever take over txt. I do think that for example if you had a skydiving blog. You would write about it then post a video showing you experience. Then people could comment on how scared you look or how much fun you were having. I don’t see video taking over anytime soon.

  16. Arizona Real Estate - Rick on November 5th, 2007

Video blogs are cool, assuming that the video is of something that one wants to view. Skydiving for example, is cool and something that many people want to view; however, for the purposes of sharing information… reading can be done at one’s own pace, whereas a video must be viewed at a predetermined pace. Personally I prefer to read when searching for information, this way I can quickly skim over the text and then read in detail the areas which pertain to my query.

  17. Rob on November 6th, 2007

I reckon if enough people do it, the less confident will feel alot more confident, and eventually catch on.

  18. SFK on November 8th, 2007

I think video blogs are great for sharing stories, TV clips, and other favorite video clips. It seems that if you are a fan of somebody’s blog, you would want to watch a video that backed up their point of view or you would like to check out a personal video of theirs, like the skydiving video!

  19. insurance panama on November 8th, 2007

video blogs, damn good stuff. i recently uploaded my videos on utube and metacafe and guess what.. after 3 days it was posted all over video blogs across the internet. its amazing how technology evolve.

  20. Althaf on November 8th, 2007

The video quality is poor. You should think about it.

  21. Jason Neuman on November 8th, 2007

    Althaf

I’m thinking you haven’t been skydiving before base on your comment. The video is performed with a bubble arm cam and then placed on a CD I had to record it with my digital camera in order to even get a file small enough to view on YouTube.

When I do an actual vLogs the video would be top quality. I was just sharing my skydive video it wasn’t intended to be an actual vLog entry.

  22. Althaf on November 8th, 2007

I see. I have a different idea Jason. I didnt know this is how it was done.

    Good Luck

  23. Mike C on November 15th, 2007

Do you really think that video blogs will take off in a big way? I think they kind of have a little bit already.

  24. kelvin on November 15th, 2007

I currently run a travel video blog and I don’t think vblog are good to make, because it’s very difficult to make your own video for the blog. It will take you more time and energy.

  25. Internet Phone Service on November 19th, 2007

Video is the best way of expressing something. I think it will help you in long run. Thanks a lot.

  26. Furniture Store on November 20th, 2007

Vlogs is certainly set to be a big thing on the internet. There is no medium as powerful as the visual medium and that is especially true for user generated content.

  27. Jeremy on November 28th, 2007

There is no way this will take off and thats a good thing. Not sure if all the geeky nerdy bloggers who spend 23hrs a day at their computers would be any appealing to the audience. Also, it would make the blogs harder to access for the people at work, school etc since they might not always be able to listen to audio.

  28. digitalnomad on November 29th, 2007

I think videos (not vlogs) are important to marketing for the instant buzz on YouTube. I am not sold on it being necessary for a blog.

You cannot capture key points like you can with words. There is a place for both.

  29. UK HDTV on December 11th, 2007

Videos really adds flavor to a blog.It is also a common psychology that we will be more attracted towards lively items than a written document when we are looking for something

  30. jack on December 11th, 2007

I run a video blog, what would u suggest i do to get more
users on it? are the videos good enough or?

  31. sb dunks on December 15th, 2007

I think sponsorship will be the next big thing - once companies realize they can cut out the middle man and deal direct with the people that run websites, they will begin to see worthwhile advertising streams that are no longer about clicks but about brand saturation. Associate your brand with one of the blogging world big hitters and, unless the blogger does something controversial and offkey, it should work.

  32. JC on December 15th, 2007

Yeah video blogging is the future or else we’ll all get carpal tunnel. I suggest video blogging with sock puppets if you want to retain privacy.

I found a website that uses Vlogs. Now I understand what you were talking about. I will put a link so you can check it out. Not bad but politics are not really my thing. It is nice to see the other side of the scope.

  38. Free Myspace Layouts on June 10th, 2008

I definately think video blogging is the new thing. Even if you check out on myspace there are a lot of people who are putting videos on their myspace layout pages. It’s a new craze and it is only going to get bigger as time goes on. We even see new advertising networks that are offering videos.
