Top Commentator Michael Beck – Digitalnomad

Jason has given the opportunity to write a post as the top commenter for the month of April. This got me thinking about the particular feat of making the most comments to this blog two months in a row.

I have to admit that as a new blogger, last month it was part of an exercise to see if I could be the “Top Commentator” position on this site. This time around I was merely making comments without being focused on being the person with the most comments.

I actually have settled in to the habit of making comments on blogs that I genuinely like and regularly visit, Ja Kel Daily Dot Com being one of the regulars. Do something consistently for 30 days and it becomes a habit.

I find myself reading blogs mostly related to technology tips and also for the marketing
advice of more seasoned bloggers.

Sometimes I feel that I probably should be spending more time working on my own blogs than spending so much time making comments on other blogs. I have concluded the influence this has had on my own blogging is that I have a better feel for the concept of social networks and what Web 2.0 is all about.

I can now see how many people are just trying to game SEO and ranking systems to gain traffic and be more visible, but really present nothing but hype and have very little to offer in their blogging. Others are more altruisitc, blogging because they want to write an account of personal experiences, or be a contributing voice to a particular movement or social agenda.

Nobody can say for sure how blogging will evolve, if it will be regulated somehow in the future, or what the ultimate influence it will have on ecommerce, emerging technolgies, and society as a whole. Commenting on blogs does seem to me to be a critical part of the intent and purpose of blogging in and of itself.

My interests include ecommerce and new technology in the pursuit of personal and financial freedom. My blog “The Sovereign Journey” deals with the issues of personal privacy, natural law, self ownership and self determination.

I find myself commenting more these days, i’m new to it as well. I’m finding blogs to be more current than some of the public forums i used to read. I’m also finding i lean towards the blogs that add some personal experiences to the mix.

Just wanted to mention that as most of us have read about what effect making blog comments may have on page rank, today all 3 of my blogs updated with Google PR of 4/10. I have been blogging less than 90 days.

I think making comments has probably helped. Certainly on sites that have “rel=nofollow” disabled.

Very impressive commenting on other sites is an area I would like to pick up on but have not had the time between this blog and my full time job.

Now, thanks for letting us know that commenting helps. I was a skeptic till I read your comment digitalnomad.

I only comment on articles if I feel I can add value to the discussion. If I am being honest I have to say that the possibility of getting into a ‘Top Commentators’ list is an incentive, but I generally comment on my favourite blogs regardless of whether they have this plugin installed.

Yes, it is a strategy that works. I have started a new blog with a domain name (not a free blog).

I am going to track everything to have a record of how different strategies work. This time around I am going for viral and organic search traffic.

It may take longer, but I am interested in quality and targeted traffic.

I have to admit, first time around I got a little too involved in some of the gaming techniques just to see what would happen.

I now am questioning how important rank is, since my strategy is to drive traffic and that is not totally dictated by rank.

My blog (with a paid domain name) is pretty new, and one of my main goals is traffic before advertising. I’m still not sure if ranking is the top traffic getter. I can see it helping but how much really?

  8. Jason Neuman

I say if you are going to monetize (advertise) just do it from the start that way your readers are used to it.

  9. gaskinracing

i was thinking of bringing it slowly, but having it all setup ready to go. I could be wrong.

    To Jason:

So do you think monetizing right away has been successful? I had adsense up, but have not made much of consequence.

It seems like everything else like review, or paid posts require you to have at least Google PR and 90 days of posting.

The traffic I am talking about is more for selling an ecommerce item, like a report, ebook, or affiliate programs.

Any thoughts, or experience on that?

  11. Jason Neuman

Yes I think it’s best to start from the beginning with monetizing because the readers will be used to it. If AdSense is the only program you qualify for then join it and integrate it into your site for best optimization. It does not matter if you are making money from the program only that you have on your site and readers are used to seeing it there.

My Opinion & what I did with this site: I did not qualify for all programs I am using at the moment from the beginning just slowly integrated them in as I was accepted.

Thanks. Make some sense I guess, and you say it has worked for you.

    Good enough for me.

Okay, do you have another chance this time, Jason?

I already heard a long time ago that commenting in blog without nofollow help much but I had not realised that it will help really much a blog/site better. But now I am commenting almost everyday to differents blogs.

I agree that one should get in the habit to comment on blog. But to achieve the status of top commentators is something different. Once I started first time commenting on blog what I observed was that I made well intelligent thoughtful suggestions and found myself in top commentator list. It does not matter how many comments you made on blog rather quality of comment. But I agree that frequent visit to particular blog has good impression. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Excellent post. Very helpful information for everyone.

I do not see much effect on my sales at the moment. The fact is that, i was not depending on adsense. I positioned my blog to sell something which i manufacture. So, they money coming in from sales.
