Ten Simple Trust Building Techniques
Want to build trust with ten simple trust building techniques?
OK, that was a silly question. Of course you do.
Trust is generally an exercise in creating a site environment in which readers respond well to and are willing to pass along your site details to others. To present a case that visitor find beneficial and trustworthy you need to follow some simple common sense techniques..
- 1. Website design is the first impression; make sure it’s professional and relevant to the subject matter.
- 2. Navigation must be perceptive. If visitors can’t find what they are looking for easily, they will question your competence in providing what they want.
- 3. People buy people; make the site personal by giving it its own character and voice.
- 4. Add content frequently to your site. It shows that the site is active.
- 5. Grammar and spelling matter! Errors give the impression of negligence and lack of care.
- 6. Outrageous and unbelievable claims, like “Read this site and you’ll be a millionaire with just a few hours work a day.” You’re site will be labeled as; a scam, get-rich-quick schemes and rip-off site.
- 7. Focus on building your long-term reputation, not on making quick sales.
- 8. Publish your photo or the photos of the key people involved with the site. This reinforces the fact that there are real people behind the site.
- 9. On the ‘Contact Us’ page, provide an email form, telephone number, fax and address of the company. Note: In Europe, it is a legal requirement for sites taking funds, but even sites driven by advertising will benefit from openness.
- 10. Don’t lie to make money. It is very short-sighted to lie to visitors to sell them rubbish. They’ won’t come back or, worse still, they’ll actively condemn your site on forums and blogs.
Site trust gives visitors real value and that’s what it’s really all about. Do everything you can to ensure trust integrity, and you’ll find that traffic/visitors will slowly increase over time.
The ten simple trust techniques is in no way a complete list. What other trust technique strategies work for you?

The thrust of the suggestions remains valid in any kind of business. It is by experience that one gets to trusting any body or thing and the very first impression made can make all the difference. Adapting universal values to this particular medium has been done with taste and elan. My congratulations and thanks.
Replying on users emails is always a good thing to build trust. But even more important, listen to the propositions and actually making a change about users requests is even better.
You can make a little change only and it really works miracles because you are showing respect and care.
I definitely think that building trust with your readers works in gaining more readers and referrals. so that is a big thing!
These are great tips, thanks so much for sharing!
I’d like to add to Tubelounge’s comments by saying that replying to peoples comments on your blog posts is also a good way to build trust.
If I come back and find that the author has replied to something I wrote, I have more faith in them that they are genuine and stick around longer to see what they have to say next.
Blogging is about being part of a community. Your blogger next door is your friend.
I agree 100% that blog authors should reply to comments for building trust and it also helps increase your traffic at the same time.

I feel trust takes time, even such as the new medium as the Internet
Good reputation can also be added in the mix
Most of my business is indeed on trust and word of mouth. There’s a correlation there
Good tips there
Out of all this, I like the photo of adding personal photos to the blog the way you do. It really connects the reader to the blogger. Now I know on whose blog, I am commenting and I can imagine the face of the blogger while reading the post.
Photos is my fav tip. I have my photo on the sidebar and I’ve heard that other people’s subscriber count went up when adding a photo.
I agree… For me, I think a site’s navigation is one of the most important things. I can’t stand visiting a site and not being able to get around!
I see tons of blogs using the same templates, and I remember those blogs by the design, not by their name. If they had a nice custom design, a nice name, and good content, I believe branding their name into my head would be a whole lot easier.
i wouldn’t worry too much about a customized design unless u really know what u are doing and it looks attractive. if u are new to blogging then go with one of the free ones, or at least for the time being.
Perhaps number 10 should be number 1. I think that is the hardest thing to detect on the Interwebs…whether or not something is for real.
I have been reading your blog for the almost the beginning, and have to give you credit for shooting from the hip.
Hate to say, but maybe you will appreciate this as a reasonable criticism.
Regarding number 5, you really need to proof read, or use spell check. This is not that important, but a numbered list for this article would be better because of the nature of the headline and the content.
Reasonable criticism taken and the tips are now numbered. I also went ahead and spell checked number five again it was error free.
Note: I always spell check all articles – since I write in word.
I am agree too, just like the other ones … in first case it has to look professional, just like in first tips you just said it, in second case it has to help visitors with useful tips.
Thanks for you smart suggestion.
This is a great list and the web would be a much better place even if half the sites out there followed these guidelines…
Sounds like the main theme is to be open and up front with your ‘customers’. Don’t hide behind your website, put yourself out there, and just like a traditional business, stand behind your work and be there in case they want to reach out to a real person. Thanks for this. I’ve been trying to preserve my privacy with my websites, but I’ll make an effort to be more open.
I used to be very anonymous when making my first few blogs. I recently transitioned into a more open and straightforward approach, even including pictures of myself in my sites. It has made a big difference, as I feel that people really trust me and are more open to communicating, asking questions, and offering feedback. Great list.
