Mobile Web Surfing dot mobi

The dot mobi domain era was initially opened 22 May 2006 by Mobile Top Level domain the company put in charge by the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Thousands of domain names were registered within the first day. For some including myself were not apart of this buying frenzy due either not being aware of it, or believed that is was not necessary to adopt a new domain for the mobile internet.

However larger corporations went ahead and registered their dot-mobi name anyway, because they wanted to protect their names from cybersquatters. Companies such as “Sedo” that choose to take advantage of the dot mobi craze cashed in by buying up a load of top desirable names. Here are a few top dot mobi sales (makes me sick I wasn’t up on this);

  • Flowers.mobi - $200,000
  • Poker.mobi - $150,000
  • Ringtones.mobi - $145,000
  • Sportsbook.mobi - $129,800
  • News.mobi - $110,000
  • Hosting.mobi - $101,000
  • Fun.mobi - $100,000

In 2006 mobile phone web surfing was almost known existent. Presently, going into 2008 it is estimated that 1.3 billion people are expected to be connected to the Internet via cell phones, according to research firm GSM Association.

Today nearly a year and half later I decided I would have a look at the bottom of barrel for a dot mobi address. To my surprise I was able to purchase a top level celebrity address that had not been snatched up yet, http://www.celebrity-gossip.mobi. Of course we also secured our dot mobi for our domain http://www.jakeldaily.mobi

I used the dot mobi site builder at http://mtld.mobi/ to create a mobile website. The site is straight forward and all information is given in detail steps to get your basic mobile site uploaded to your hosting.  To sign up for dotMobi site builder click here.

2. Protect your brand from competitors who might wish to take advantage of the name recognition generated by your popular .COM. This is also a great opportunity to enhance your brand by registering a related name—many generic words and phrases are still available!

3. Gain the option of launching a smaller, more concise companion to your main Web site that can be accessed via a variety of mobile devices, including cell phones, SmartPhones, Windows Mobile Devices, RIM devices and more.

4. Make it easy for people on the go to find you - anyone looking for your mobile URL will automatically guess yourpersonaldomainname.MOBI.Benefit from the worldwide recognition that .MOBI means mobile.

At the moment I do not have any intentions of developing our mobile page any further. To be honest if by chance a entertainment company shows interest and makes a reasonable offer we more than likely would sell the domain (just like the other .mobi adresses I’m marketing).

Unfortunately, some countries (eg Canada) charge bucket loads for internet access. This will be something very important and I will need to pick up a cellphone in the future for the sake of testing.

That was good thinking and more importantly, prompt action to exploit an opportunity. Congratulations. Good food for thought for me to do something on similar lines too. Thanks.

    I think the .mobi is a failure…

  4. Futon-Matt on January 2nd, 2008

Wow, I think it’s crazy that companies would drop that kind of cash on a .mobi Thanks for sharing.

I do not think anyone gets dot mobi. There are four times as many cell phones as there are PCs and TVs combined. That is a lot of cell phones and potential customers. The whole principle behind dot mobi is a guaranteed wonderful experience for the cellphone user. If you use dot mobi with a cell phone, you are guaranteed that the site has had to meet certain guidelines for the user to be able to view it. I foresee dot mobi becoming a very big player because of the sheer number of cell phone users. Can you imagine being away from your PC and wanting to order a Christmas gift and being able to go to christmasgifts.mobi straight from your cell phone and being guaranteed that the site will fit perfectally on your phone? Mobility has shown to be successful every single time. Look at the iPod and how successful it is because now we can easily take music with us. People want to use the Internet without being strapped to a PC. Dot mobi will guarantee that will happen.

Cell phones are definitely a big market. But I just see mobi as a lot harder to type out on a phone. dot com is shorter. I think the next step is making sites that are cell phone friendly.

Dot Mobi is specifically allocated to for Internet content designed for viewing on cell phones and other mobile devices. These Web pages will contain smaller images, reduced graphics and none of the other digital furniture that makes ordinary sites too big for tiny phones to handle.

There is even talk (Top Players) (ICANN) (WIPO) about only allowing dot mobi addresses on mobile devices. If this happens it will be mandatory to register a dot mobi address if you are pursuing a site that will be viewable on mobile devices.

dot com not allowed on mobile devices? - it’s a possibility

I think there is no end if we fear for someone encashing on our domain name, I really cannot think of keep on buying domain names with various extensions.

  11. HiFi Guy on January 4th, 2008

It could be expensive to buy all extensions but the registrars need money to survive :D

I am kind of annoyed I didnt get into .mobi at the beginning, but however many are sold for ridiculious prices like that, i dont think anyones going to type in google.mobi or ebay.mobi unless some of the big sites start really promoting it to their users, I think .mobi will be about as popular as .cat

  13. Tomarni on January 4th, 2008

Wow, I thought that domaining is not that lucrative…

    Dude…

“Companies such as “Sedo” that choose to take advantage of the dot mobi craze cashed in by buying up a load of top desirable names”

They do not own a single .mobi domain. They are just offering the marketplace platform for MTLD. MTLD owns and held back these domains. Get informed.

I am not too sure about surfing the net on my mobile. It just seems so cramped to be doing all that stuff on such an itty bitty screen.

  18. Vilmos on January 6th, 2008

i am a long time in this domainindustry but what you are talking about is surprising me, great, thanks!

  19. sexy and funny DuDe on January 6th, 2008

My friend and I have been talking about this recently. Maybe you don’t like surfing on mobile phones, but that’s the future. And if you want a piece of cake, you’ll have to evolve.

  20. Patrick Burt on January 6th, 2008

.com’s not allowed on mobile phones would be terrible. You can use CSS to have a stylesheet unique to a mobile’s display.

  21. sexy and funny DuDe on January 7th, 2008

Probably, yes. But it’s about money. So what big companies decide, that’s they way it’s gonna be . And we have to play by their rules.

  22. Online Money on January 7th, 2008

As we say time is money, in future .mobi or anyother extension developed will be most useful and successful
