Making Money from Blogging

You hammer your keyboard day after day, spreading your truths to the world (or at least to people that read your site or stumble upon it) via your blog. Unfortunately, earning such desired profits from blogging demands serious time and energy, and what begins as a dream/hobby quickly formulates into a full time job reality.

I’ve decided to address this after receiving many emails asking how we make money blogging and basically having writers block from being away for the past month. November profits were: $2033 (sponsored ads, links & reviews). Direct sells is the method that works best for our site; loads of daily emails to smaller companies offering our advertisement package (not spam or database email lists - companies are individually search for via Google).

Other advertising methods we’ve used or are using now: AdSense, Text-Link-Ads, Azoogle Ads, Intelli Txt, DoubleClick, Tribal Fusion, Adbrite, Clicksor, AdHearUs, Kanoodle, Pheedo, Yahoo-Ads Bidvertiser, Fastclick SponsoredReviews, ReviewMe, Textlinkbrokers and Value Click.

There are literally millions of blogs already and several thousands starting every week all wanting to make money online. What does it take to get to the level that we are at now? There are three fundamental areas to blogging and the rest will fall into place.

Content
Well, since starting Ja Kel Daily in February 2006 the Entertainment section has 3417 posts and comments are closed due to obsessed crazy celebrity fans, the Sitepro section started December 2007 and I have posted 224 articles with 33,361 spam comments and 2,291 actual comments.

Determination
Self-determination theory (SDT) is a general theory of human motivation concerned with the development and functioning of personality within social contexts. The theory focuses on the degree to which human behaviors are volitional or self-determined – that is, the degree to which people endorse their actions at the highest level of reflection and engage in the actions with a full sense of choice “wiki defined”.

Time
One view is that time is part of the fundamental structure of the universe, a dimension in which events occur in sequence, and time itself is something that can be measured. wiki defined

In plan English just keep trying and in time you may actually achieve your goal!

Nice post to re start the site. I particularly like the paragraph/s on time. Welcome back.

  2. Paul

Agreed welcome back. Your wifey was dropping the hammer on people not fully reading the post and only made fun of me one or two times. LoL

I don’t mean to get to personal, but are these “two” blogs the only things you do to make money? Or do either of you have at least a part time job to cover some of the cost of having a family? We are going into our 7 month and are become strapped for cash. We have a site coming with a fresh look and will be changing the look of our current site, which I believe will make it easier to lock in future clients. I will keep you posted. I guess the real question is that if I wanted someone like HomeDepot to place a banner ad on my site, you suggest that I try and contact them?

An educated and well written post!

  3. Patrick Burt

$2033 is impressive m8. What do your pageviews and uniques look like out of curiosity?

  4. Jason Neuman

I work full time for the U.S. Government as a IT professional and Kelly (wife) handles full time the entertainment blog / site marketing / sales / and our two children.

The sitepro section is part time, I write one article every fourth day and when I’m away or to busy I do not write an article. (I do not blog from work in case some were thinking that)

To get someone like HomeDepot interested you would have to have a minimum of 500,000 pageviews per month. If you want to make money from advertisements you need to focus on smaller clients that have a common interest and then provide them with a reason why such as; readership and traffic. Then offer a discount for purchase with in 24 hours it gets them with an impose purchase.

Patrick Burt – 50,000 uniques 150,000 pagviews (average) sometimes more.

  5. Matt

I think the best points of that were Content and Time…nothing worth value is easy to obtain; success is doing what the failures will not do. Great post and wish you continued success.

  6. Furniture Store

Hi Jason, welcome back and good post there.

  7. sexy & funny DuDe

95% of people quit in first 3 months. Everyone else make their Internet adventure into a success, big or small. So if your doing this for 6 months already, you’re on a good path.

Now, push for another 6 months more :)

  8. Music Dictionary

I am not an American. So, please forgive me if I sound dumb. Is it permissible to moonlight for a full time American government employee?

  9. Murali

$2033 profits for a month is very good. This is encouraging for newbie like me. I understand the time and effort you would have put for this. I am planning for a new blog for 3 months now and waiting. Till I feel confident about the quality of my content I do not want to jump in. Posts like this doing great in boosting my confidence. All the best for you.

  10. Jason Neuman

Not sure what you mean by moonlight. I never work on blog releated stuff from work. I write all my articles from home (time stamped in wordpress) and only 1 article every four days. It’s not full time for me, my wife works on the site full time from home.

  11. James @ Total Web Review

Howdy Jason, good to have you back blogging. You are right when you talk about determination and you really have to like what you are doing. I planned to just pay for website expenses in my first year ($200). Thanks to google, ppp, and commission junction I have made around 2 times that. I am hoping to have a better year this time around but it is still a lot of work. The writing is fun but the site promotion and maintenance can be rather bothersome. I kind of wish I would have stuck with developing Open Road Biker instead of working on other domain names also (trying to keep up more than 5 sites now!). I may just sell all of my sites except for 2 later on. I will probably wait and see how they all do while I am gone for the next 15 months and when I get back I will make the decision to sell or not.

  12. Riksa

95% quits before 3 months, eh? That’s interesting. I’ve just started blogging, even though the blog is of a personal nature and doesn’t really aim at making profit. I’ll be back in three months to tell you how I’m doing. =)

  13. Jason Neuman

    - Riksa (welcome to the site)

It’s good to start a blog out in a personal nature (hobby) and have it grow from there. Most all that set out with expectations of making money from blogging from the begging quit due to the extreme let down on actual profit turn around time (sometimes years)

  14. Orange Kango

Congrats on the $2033! Wish I could do that . . . guess I’d better keep reading.

  15. John Kain

Welcome back. $2033 for a month nice

  16. Adam

I guess blogging will be there for a long time to come, Its easy to set up a blog and add content, better than any other way of social interaction on the web. It has already changed the face of the web. More the number of people getting into blogging , more will be the number looking for ways to make money out of it.

  17. News and Blogs

Wow, congratulations — that is a great amount of money for a blogging effort. I am starting my own blogging journey, so hopefully, I can get to where you are.

  18. Rice Blogger

wow..you are back…you are making some good money there…nice

  19. Paul

Has anyone heard that a couple phone companies are trying to change the way people buy the internet. I have heard that if you can afford it your website will run the same. If you can’t you will be using a generic form of it. These phone companies are upset that Google is making billions.

Ed Whitacre, the CEO of (then-SBC) now AT&T issued his famous manifesto attacking Google and other Web sites for “using my pipes (for) free.”

I want to know what you think.

My phone service used to be Verison since hearing about this I have switched companies!

  20. Life is Colourful

I agree to the direct sales part, I recently could make some $1500 by direct sales. But I really admire the way Kelly helps you in your efforts of direct sales – if I am not wrong.

  21. Jason Neuman

Kelly runs the marketing, sales, blogging of the entertainment section fulltime. The blog is actually hers and I only decided to start the Sitepro section to share what we’ve learned part time (since Feb 07). The majority of the income comes directly from the entertainment section of the site due to the fact it appeals to a larger paying audience (entertainment, clothing, celebrity and much more).

The Sitepro appeals to the technical / blogger audience and the reality is this market is on the very low end of actual paying customers.

  22. Vinod

I fully appreciate your points that content, determination and time are the foremost important factors to determine the success of a blog in attracting traffic. In addition, a good control on language and deep knowledge of the subject with capability to give it interesting and humorous tinge to the content are also very essential to make people read it. I think, any effort to bring people to the website can fail badly if the content is not useful and interesting. Thanks.

  23. Chris

Very interesting and informative post. I really like the Self Determination Theory. :)

  24. Registry Repair

This is not so easy to make money on line. many people thins that ,this is very
easy. thanks for your post. this is simply wonderful .

  25. Wedding Catering

Wow, thats a very nice income. Hopefully 2008 will yield even more success for you. =D

  26. gloria

    You write:

ok- but what do you sell: advertising places?

    thanks for answer

  27. Jason Neuman

Yes – ads; 300 x75 and 300 x 250 with a weekly review post. That’s what works best for us.

  28. DulceNegosyante

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll take note on that. Happy new year!

  29. Edward

$2033, what a nice number you have over there!

  30. Andrew

Agree, it really is a lot of work to keep a blog alive, active and popular. So much more work than a niche site. I had a blog for two years and had to get rid of it a few months back. It was fun but just inefficient.

  31. April

I really need to get out there and sell my blog to advertisers. I keep thinking “when I get x number of visitors or rss subscribers then I’ll really start selling…” I should do it now. Adsense pays so little.

  32. Matt

Yep, persistence really is the key.

I have made some money off my blogs. The best results were not through Adsense or other similar programs, but by placing affiliate links on my blogs. I recommend that you go with programs that pay good hefty commissions, since of course you earn more per sale, but this also indicates that the product is a good seller (since they’re happy to give so much away for sending the lead).

The easiest money I’ve earned was off sponsored posts.

Still, not living off my blogs so far. But the income is growing …

  33. Mary Ann

you make some good mony there, nice

  34. Turn One Pound into One Million

Well done on your efforts. I have been blogging for a year now and have seen my monthly income steadily increasing. It isn’t a good hourly rate but it fits around the family and is fun! I am set to make about $1300 this month mainly from paid articles.

  35. Make Friends, Earn Money

I totally agree with your comments, you can’t really make any decent money doing this in your “Spare Time” it takes significant commitment and time to build any site whether it be a blog or a website. The results here though are testimony to your hardwork and committment and i hope your earnings go through the roof this year, thanks Jason for an excellent post.

  36. Merter Erkoc

I agree to the direct sales part, I recently could make some $1250 by direct sales. But I really admire the way Kelly helps you in your efforts of direct sales

  37. Mortgage Tampa

If you want to make money from advertisements you need to focus on smaller clients that have a common interest and then provide them with a reason why such as; readership and traffic.

  38. Sofia Norton

Its great to create a blog if you like the topic and you can put some time dicipline in your work. But the key is to get a quality visitors, update the content, and earn from the ads. I know some people who generate a lot of blogs just to get an extra money

  39. Andrew Murray | Lifepath Unlimited

Thanks for the transparent post. I appreciate that you take the time to explain exactly what you’re doing.

And I agree that it takes time, but everything of value takes time. Speaking as one who makes a full time income working a home business, always investing in your knowledge (reading posts like these) and being persistent does pay off.

    Keep up the good work.

  40. Free Banner Maker

Thanks for this information. I really want to earn money out of blogging. But the thing is, I haven’t yet created a blog or something, I don’t know where to begin or more specifically how to do it. A pity to be lagged so behind.
