Lion at Mamaia Beach Romania
Some work colleagues and I went to the mall in Constanta, Romania and afterwards stopped at Mamaia Beach to have Sunday lunch and a beer. While eating the three of noticed two guys walking by with a lion cub, yeah I know not something you see everyday at the beach.
Anyway the lion cub was there working taking photographs with all the intrigued people at the beach. My friend decided to have his taken for a charge of 16 Lei (5X7 Print) and since I had my camera with me I asked the guy if I could have a picture holding him also. He agreed and my picture was free of charge.
Holding a lion cub was not on my list of things to do but I will be crossing it off now. How many of you have ever held a Lion and lived to tell about it!

Sad thing about these lions. I’m from Romania … there’s a debate now about this. Most of the animals are kept in very bad conditions and they are tranquilized most of the time.
Why do you think a lion accepts this treatment … he’s not a cat or something.
If lions or any other animals are being mistreated then yes there should law in Romania stopping this. I did wonder what a lion was doing on a beach.
They give them light drugs, just enough to make them peaceful.
About the laws, yes, you’re right …
Anyway … how’s Romania? I’m curious what other think …
It’s not a place that I would choose for holiday or to live. The food is not to my liking and most areas are really dirty, not: Mamaia. I’m only here for work purposes but the weather has been really nice since being here for the last three weeks.
Didn’t know they had lions there at all. In US you would have to have some kind of special permit, and I am sure you could not take it to the beach.
Probably would get arrested and have a huge fine, jail time, etc.
I don’t think they should be even brought out of forests… Anyways the picture is nice… And last time I tried to hold a lion, but since then I am dead :D.
p.s. Your post tells me the reason, why my comment is still pending moderation

After your comment above about bad conditions for the lion from the beach I decided to do a little reading on the subject. I did not find any info on the treatment of lions on the beach but however I did find an interesting article about all animals in zoos in Romania about to die because of lack of money.
“A BBC investigation has found that deformed, aged or sick animals are to be killed as the cash-strapped authorities admit that many of Romania’s 41 zoos, often burdened with the legacy of the Communist era, will fail to make the grade on EU Directives by a December 31 deadline.”

Aww thats the cutest thing i’ve ever seen. I want one! HA Yeah right. Thats an awesome picture though.
You have a very cool blog with lots of useful, interesting info.
I had problems with a regular house cat… you can keep the lion!
I want to see a pic of you holding an adult lion lol
The lion is adorable- but you would have to imagine that it definitely is drugged in order to keep it calm like that. You absolutely would not ever see anything like that in the US, for better or worse. Probably better, because I’m sure the conditions aren’t good for the lion. Still an incredible experience that I’m kind of jealous about
Nice,i love lions but i scared lions, lion baby are not dangreos
[…] 29th, 2007 by Jason Neuman I’ve returned home to Belgium from Romania much earlier than I expected. Anyway really happy to be back with my family and my one year old […]
Woa that’s awesome! I have several scars from my cats, so I don’t think I’d be brave enough to approach a lion!
