How To Build a Reader Empire

Once you have made the decision to start a blog, you’ll need to determine a schedule and then continue with it. When considering this consistency try to take into consideration all aspects of your life and then make the decision on posting frequency. My recommendation would be to start out with one post per week and slowly work your way up from there. (read more on blogging consistency)

Article Headers
When choosing article headers try to focus your article within your niche and always keep in mind what readers will actually want to read. Remember when making this determination always try to use an angle that captures a wide viewpoint area to ensure the attraction of the larger audience.

Reader Interaction
The best thing about a blog is the comment feature which allows reader interaction.  Enabling the comment feature on your blog encourages readers to interact with the site and at the same time this feature makes the site into a community. However a site that has commenting enabled and has few to no comments has the reverse effect, giving potential readers the feeling that the site is crap. When making this decision remember to take into consideration all aspects of site commenting such as; traffic, spam, annoying (rude) and the approval process. On Ja Kel Daily SitePro allows comments but not on the Entertainment section due to annoying (rude) comments and all first time and comments with links have to be approved.

Basic SEO Principles
What does the SEO have to do with building a site reader base? Traffic! First off the acronym SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Ok, the basic SEO principles include; keywords used wisely, effective post titles, link building meta tags and much more. An example of an effective post title; “how to increase your page rank” the title of this article is searched over 250 times a day so if it’s indexed and comes up in the top 10 you’ve guessed it, more traffic and readers.

Find Your Balance
In the blog world this is a very mixed viewed and gray area. A shorter written post is usually well received as opposed to a long winded post. Google on the other hand love long winded posts and supposedly they index sites higher for it – who really knows, speculation. Anyway I say find a middle ground and just write what you need to say. When editing the article format it into entries to ensure that you hold the readers attention, such as I have done in this article. Remember to always keep the articles on focus (topic).

Grammar Check
My wife is English (England) and even with all her help I still have grammatical and spelling errors from time to time with my Texan English. Blogs that are filled with these errors usually never make it into the A-list blogging category. What can you do? I use Microsoft word to help ease my pain and recommend that if you are not using a utility to double check your work, you should be because you are losing readers.

Reliable Resource
In a way this kind of falls under consistency mentioned above, but in an overall sense. Truly basic if your readers know that they can rely on the site (author) for reporting on a specific topic they will continue to keep coming back.  Take a minute and think of what sites you go to frequently, these are great examples of reliable resources. The key is even if your site doesn’t have any exciting article topics, continue to look for ways to really dig into the subject matter and make it interesting.

The RSS Feed
The most passionate readers expect their favorite blogs to have full RSS feeds. Most all blogging dashboards have it built in but I recommend using FeedBurner.com for your feeds, just copy and paste the given code where you would like the subscription button. If you are not using an RSS feed, now is the best time to start. When promoting RSS feeds the best location is near the top of the site and with in blog posts. Subscribe to my Full RSS feeds!

This is a good series you have going, and I am thinking that you are posting via a time stamp. This, of course, is another function of time management.

  2. Niagara Guy

Consistency is very important as your readers will be expecting your post on time.

Grammar for me is a big issue. It really bugs me when people don’t proof read their blog posts. It isn’t as big of a deal when a commenter makes a spelling or grammar mistake; however, when someone who is posting a blog makes mistakes it causes me to have less respect for what they have to say.

Creating a posting time or time frame that your readers become use too is very important. When they show up at a certain time each day to read you they do not understand that why nothing is new. As far as Grammar, well the net covers the entire world and not everyone is fluent in English. Even if you compare Brit English with American English you will find many differences. Simple words like color would be classed as misspelled by a Brit using the word colour. I myself am Thai, in which letters, sounds and everything is new and alien. I do try my very best to make my grammar correct, but many times I still fall short. Does that make me less credible?
Sorry for the long comment and thank you for the dofollow

Really nice post, very useful for new bloggers. I do hope there will be a detailed post on Reader Interaction in the future. Getting people on your blog is one thing, but to call them to action and keep them on a blog is something different.

If you only write one post per week don’t you think it will take a long time to get indexed by searches engines?

  8. Racheumeuneu

Getting traffic on your blog isn’t so difficult, monetizing this traffic isn’t the same game

  9. Jason Neuman

If you only write one post per week and it is at the top of its game you will receive more than enough traffic from just the one post. The indexing will come in time (be patience) and something you should not be worried with if you are posting articles that are bringing in 1000s of hits.

The frequency must surely depend on the subject and topicality. Also the motivation of the blogger and his/her commitment to the blog is important. The other tips are very useful.

Great information. Sticking to a schedule is something I really need to do.

  12. Steve M

Great to see the fundamentals put so clearly. If people just follow these simple steps they will increase their traffic before they know it

My grammar isn’t perfect, but I think its OK. I struggle with the differences between Brit and US English though. At the moment I am using a mixture of spelling my grammar is supposed to be English version. I am blogging in Australia so UK English is the norm -but most of the readers on the internet are American – any hints on how to resolve this one!

Well, I am Thai and know very well about Brit and American English being different. Words like colour, flavour, modell and fag. I learned the hard way on most of them. American English drops the letter u and model has only 1 l.
The word fag and fag end in Brit refers to a cigarett. I wrote an article once before about someone dropping their fag end off the balcony and one of my comments swore they murdered their gay lover. So I can certainly see your point.

  15. Jason Neuman

Yes very true Brit and American English is definitely different. Having a Brit and a American in the same household can be funny at times when it comes to the language differences :-)

i post my blog every once in a while and no problem with the readers and the ads monetizing thought my problem is the time spent writing articles thats the time consuming part

  17. bLuefRogX

I normally queue up articles when I have the time to write them, like on Sundays and post them on a daily basis should I have enough or at least every alternate day.

I very much agree on the reader interaction bit though, so far my comments have been few and far between, possibly giving the impression of a crap site. Do you think ‘paid’ commenters might help?

  18. MoneyMoose

Nice article. I’ve heard a lot of it before on other sites, but you’ve posted something concise and effective. I’ll try out these techniques.

    Thanks!
