Google Declares PageRank War!

It was just yesterday that I posted “Are You Mad at Googl?” concerning their policy about buying and selling text links ads. Today Google’s PageRank update makes a bold take charge statement starting with prominent high ranking sites hitting them with dramatic ranking drop.

Google wasn’t joking!

It’s Google’s search engine. They have every right to say that if you sell links, they might penalize you. Google is not telling people what to do with their sites, which is a popular argument point. Google is telling people what to do if they are concerned about doing better in Google. Don’t want to be harmed in Google? Don’t sell links. Danny Sullivan

It was only around two weeks ago that many sites took their first hit because of buying and selling links. Now Google is back for round two against policy offender sites.

The latest list of sites that took a hit on this PageRank update:

yea it kinda sux, especially for peeps like mny bro who was making $300 a month. he had to drop those advertisers in order to keep his PR. i can understand a lil as to why google is doing it but i dont really like it because it takes away some blogging incentives.

About time page rank update. My sites didn’t get any pagerank yet.

    this really sucks :(

rough move made by Google – but I don;t think this will stop blog owners to sell links :D

You have many spelling errors on your articles. For example you spelled Google as googl and I’ve noticed others. Check your articles better..

Other then that , I have noticed too alot of PR changes in some sites.

  7. Jason Neuman

Very funny that’s correct I did spell Google incorrect and if you learn to read a little better you would have noticed that I did it on purpose. Maybe it would be better to check the articles you comment on before you comment about them. :)

“Did you know that keyword search term “Googl” receives 42,797 hits per month:

So has Google done its update? I have not received a PR and I am getting worried that we will never receive one. Any advice or report on this subject would be great.

    Please help!

Seems like some big hitters have been given a stern talkign to but why not one of the main offenders text-link-ads.com? Their homepage is still a PR7 and they sell the things!

    and shoemoney’s blog stick with a PR6 ??

Wow, some of those sites got hit REALLY hard. It appears that Goog isn’t taking any stuff from them. I guess thats one way that Goog can get the guys that are getting around an algo update.

  13. Cricket Videos

This new page rank update is a joke and i agree its leading to war between webmasters. Google isn’t a good search engine. When you type in cricket or something else, the highest ranking urls are those with very little on the niche your searching for and the sites solely dedicated to that niche are at the back end of the results. Its not helping visitors satisfy what they are looking for. I believe we all need to move to yahoo soon.

I guess everyone should decide for themselves what is their best option: to sell or not to sell links. Selling links will lower Google traffic, which will eventually lead to lower prices of links sold because of the lower traffic.

Things will change, Google aims for organic linking only, so we will have to wait and see what will happen.

    Facebook forum -
Ok you got me my editing team (me) must have missed that one. Thanks for the correction. Try to remember that even the Top Media publications make mistakes and they have several editors working for them and I am only one person with many other responsibilities besides this blog. – It was just funny that you pointed out the word “googl” :)

    Paul from NewHomesSection –
Yes Google has done the PageRank update my site remained at PR5 on this update and as you can see many others got penalized.

    HiFi Guy -
I guess that’s means that at least Shoe is winning on PR since John passed him on RSS

  18. Okinawa

This has easily been the buzz of the SEO communities.

  19. Ruchir

You know, Google has seriously crossed the line, in my opinion. I mean ProBlogger, the authority on Blogging has a lower PR than scraper sites. Sheesh. I think Google changed it’s policy to: “(You) Do No Evil”.

  20. John Kain

SEO communities generally rely on PR to make money off others. Its only time till they find new ways.

  21. Paul from NewHomesSection

Hello everyone! I just would like to say that we have finally received PR YA! After 5 long months we are ranked. However, we have seen a decrease in traffic. Google has taken away some links. I hope all is well have a great Monday.

  22. Arizona Real Estate - Rick

LOL! I was wondering if that was why you misspelled Google! I too noticed many page ranks decrease since Googl updated their PRs. I don’t blame them though, it is clearly stated in Googl’s rules that selling links is not acceptable.

  23. julespaxtonfan

ggl wants ‘organic linking’ as one comment suggests.

interesting. but fanciful. googl has tremendous, unreglted power. and they are pitting their wits against a near infinite number of users, programmers, creatives etc…they are outnumbered .but they sit there in there fort…and their fort is the only thing they’ve got in some ways…in the end, i wonder, if the infinite number of users, prgraommers etc might not build another fort…or completely new datamodel.

  24. Life is Colourful

Damn, Poor statcounter, went from PR10 to PR6. I am happy that this blog is saved.

  25. digitalnomad

PR is nice, but I think it has little to do with traffic. Some of your other posts point this out. I think positioning in organic searches is more important.

BTW, looks like you managed to keep from leaking any PR.

  26. Fare Soldi

I have actually grown to a PR3, I am really happy, I have never sold links through TLA and I will never do. Google wants to dominate the adv market.

Poor TLA. So sorry for them.

    Francesco

  27. Patrick Burt

    Affected negatively? Far from it.. PR0 -> PR4 :) .

  28. saigon esl

Some people got PR, some people lost it. Now we need to figure out how to get into Google pants again ;)

  29. Furniture Store

Everyone hates Google right now. The problem is there is no viable alternative to the stranglehold Google has over the internet right now. Maybe someone should file an anti monopoly suit or something.

  30. Life is Colourful

Watch out guys! Google is still not done with PR update. They have been slamming down the websites and blogs that are into paid reviews from Payperpost or reviewme.

  31. digitalnomad

I have decided PR has little to do with marketing. I am more interested in Alexa as a metric.

In reality neither has much to do with increasing traffic. There are other ways to push traffic.

You don’t necessarily have to post frequently either.

  32. Patrick Burt

    @digitalnomad.

Since my PR increase, I have not noticed a difference in visits or SERP for keywords that I’m targeting.

  33. Money

    Well it’s about time

  34. Futon-Matt

I agree with those who said they disregard PR. Just because a site has high PR doesn’t mean it’ll actually do much for your site.

    Matt

  35. goyin

Me and some friends spoke to Matt Cutts at PubCon in vegas recently. get this- he was saying that when links are purchased with money its frowned upon, but if links were aquired by exchange of goods, its ok. i think its mainly meant for product reviews.

  36. neil strauss

Google done another PR toolbar update on 12th January 2008. I think the hype has died down on pr updates as less blogs are posting about it.

PR as seen from the toolbar is outdated since PR is actually updated everyday. As webmasters we really should not bothered much about the toolbar PR as it does not determine traffic. What we want is keyword rankings, and an increasing PR is a result of a keyword ranking campaign.

The only usage for toolbar PR is to sell text links, other advertisements, and gaining link partners. Though when caught selling links the PR would go down anyway!

  37. Gadgets4nowt

Are they saying that this only really affects the site that sells the links, or will the buyer also be penalised.

  38. Microsoft Zune

One of my domains dropped PR from 5 to 0. Probably a joint effort between google hating me and my backlinks deciding to start NoFollow link exchanges.

  39. Big Oak SEO Company

I see most of the sites have had their former PR value restored or at least have moved up from their bottom PR ranking. I wonder if Google is being more forgiving or did they all “clean up” their act.

  40. Chris

It’s going to keep happening I’m afraid. PR is getting more and more organic.

  41. Mary McKnight

With Matt Cutt’s hard line on link buying at SMX and the next update around the corner, it will be interesting to see what other sites gets hit. Google seems to have a very critical eye towards link building right now- beyond paid links (I think it is hilarious you can snitch on people- that’s just lame- I wish they would publish a list of tattle tales) if your link velocity is sketchy seems you get hit too.

  42. Pontarae

Actually achieving Page Rank on Google is still a future prospect for my blog.

I live in hope of having a PR5 page which could be demoted :-)
