Free dot Mobi Site Template

As you know from my prior post on January 1st I’ve recently join the dot mobi domain craze nearly a year and half after the initial release to the public. Since there is an estimated 2.2 billion mobile devices in use as of today I think it would be a good idea to get ahead of the game and get your mobile sites into testing and operation before your competition.

I’ve purchased http://www.jakeldaily.mobi and http://www.celebrity-gossip.mobi along with a few others I intend to squat on until I find some motivated buyers. Even now this late in the game there are still a lot of great dot mobi domains left to grab up for long term squatting and selling off when the rest of the tech world catches on and gets into mobi web surfing

Is Blogging Consistency Important?

A lot of bloggers say that blogging consistency is key.  What amount of content is just right? Should a new blog post daily? Would a successful blog only post every other day? How many times do you post and frequency?

When I first started out blogging I made a point to post everyday including weekends. Since then I have started a new blogging consistency of posting an article every three days.

Adobe Photoshop Picture Title Layers

Every since seeing this done on several other blogs I’ve been searching the net for hours for instructions on how to make an image like the one above.

Today I was fortunate enough to work with a guy that happens to be really experienced with Adobe Photoshop and he was able to show me in 5 minutes how to make an image title with the transparency title strip.

Title Layer Steps:

  • Adobe Photoshop Software
  • Select Marquee From Tools
  • Highlight the bottom section
  • Click Layer Top Tool Bar
  • Select New Layer From Drop Down
  • Click Edit Top Tool Bar
  • Click Fill From Drop Down
  • Choose Color (black) In The Menu
  • Click Windows Top Tool Bar
  • Select Layers From Drop Down
  • Double Click Your Layer
  • From The Menu Set Opacity At 60% or So (depends picture color)
  • Select Type Tool
  • Click On Transparency Area
  • Now Type What You Want To Say
  • Save The File As .png
  • Finished

That’s it now you can add all the article header pictures you like but of course you need Adobe Photoshop.  I use Adobe Photoshop 7.0 in case you’re wondering and flickr for pictures.

Are You Checking Your Site Resolutions

Ok clearly 1024×768 screen resolution is the most popular on my site and according to statistics this resolution is dominant across the net. As you can see from the Google Analytics percentage graph below this resolution is used by 40.58% of the reader traffic that comes to my site.

However as you can see there are also other resolutions to take into consideration when looking at your over all site design and how it appears to all users. While keeping this in mind today; I took a look at my site in some different resolutions to include; 800×600, 1024×768, 1280×1024 and 1600×1200 to insure that my site meet the standards that readers require when coming to the site.

After testing the site today in the resolutions above I have decided that I like my site best in 1280×1024 a little smaller but looks the best in my opinion and is preferred by 21.74% of traffic coming to the site.  Before my testing today I was with the majority on resolution 1024×768 but found that I prefer this resolution better.

When designing and or picking a Wordpress theme you really must keep these resolutions in mind because if you don’t you will lose traffic! Even though the percentage for 800×600 (& others on my chart) are very small it is still very important that your site is still catering to them also because when your site starts getting millions of page views one day those percents will account for a lot of traffic that will never come again if your site is poorly designed for their resolution.

Now test your website in IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Netscape the dominate browsers for my site are Firefox (50.72%) and IE (42.03%).  I use IE7 on my machines but I have tested the look and feel of this site in all browsers to insure that it is up to par across the board for all users.

I know that not everyone has accomplished this, so you know what to do! Oh and here’s a site I found for testing the look in different resolutions but really it’s best to just see it in real time on your own machine if you have a video card that can support the lowest to the highest resolutions.  As for the web browsers download them who knows maybe you will end up liking one of them.

Google Buying Power

In April Google announced that they are buying DoubleClick a leading company in the ad serving business.  Their reason behind the purchase is that Google and DoubleClick play different roles in online advertising. DoubleClick gives advertisers/agencies the tools to plan and deliver their online banner/video campaign. To make a long story short basically by combining Google’s infrastructure with DoubleClick knowledge they will be able to deliver the next generation of innovative ads significantly improving the overall effectiveness of online advertising.

  • Double Click (3.1 Billion)
  • Youtube (1.65 Billion)
  • Feedburner (100 Million)
  • Blogger –Pyra Labs
  • Measuremap (???)
  • Peakstream (???)
  • Jotspot (???)
  • Greenborder (???)

Google’s continued buying power is as always causing conflict in the world.  It seems this time that they have upset the EU with the DoubleClick purchase and they want to put a stop to it.  According to NYTimes.com Europe’s major consumer group BEUC said on the 4th of July 2007 that they feared the Internet search engine company Google takeover of DoubleClick would damage EU privacy rights and limit consumers’ choice of Web content.

What is coming into play with this purchase is the concern of a “Monopoly” of online advertising.  The fear is that Google will be vertically leveraged with its keyword search ads, Youtube videos and then with DoubleClick’s leadership of banner/video display ads they will leave consumers with no real ability of chose other that those served by Google.

At present Google has 90 percent share of the German, Spain, France and Britain search market.  So basically this type of market power could have a negative impact on diversity on the net.

The funny thing about all of this is Google is actually in a bidding war against Microsoft so what does it really matter who buys it - either the Monopoly software company or the Monoply search engine company!

–if you know the purchase prices of those other companies let me know.

Dell XPS M1210 Promotion

Ok I know this is a bit cheeky but in light of my new Dell 468 x 60 header advertisement I thought why not do a little promotion on a product I think is great and I am actually using nightly to write my articles for this blog. See pictures of my XPS M1210 here.

The Dell XPS M1210 laptop truly great in everyway and I love it.  The best way to describe my laptop is the power of a desktop times 2. Trust me if you are thinking of buying a laptop this is the one to go with no mistakes about it. I paid $1700 and I think if you are in the market for a notebook you should Buy a DELL Now! If you want to know what options it has and how I configured my XPS M1210 click read more

Netgear SPH200D Cordless Phone with Skype

Anytime I buy something that I am excited about or really believe in I will be posting an article about it. Anyway last week we disconnected our home phone because we were sick of paying the Belagcom Phone Company that like to take all of your money so now we just pay them for the internet access, which is still high - 43 euros! ($58).

Remember the XPS 1210 that I purchased around a month ago well I love it and it came with some free minutes on Skype so I signed up of course and that is what lead me to canceling my home phone line.  What’s great about Skype is you can call other people with Skype for free anywhere in the world and if you want to call a landline or mobile just add credit to your account in 10 (currency) increments.

My currency here is Euros so it cost me 10 euros and 0.017 per minute to call the States and England our two calling destinations we call all the time.  So far for this month we still have around 4 euros left for credit and compared to our landline we canceled we have saved around 92 euros this month.

Call your friends through the Internet, for FREE! Make and receive traditional phone calls as well—this phone plugs into your “land line” phone jack. Call ordinary phones worldwide for pennies per minute—with no monthly fees.

Simply plug the Dual-mode Cordless Phone Station into your Internet router (Ethernet port) to enjoy making Skype calls. In addition, you can plug the base station into your phone line (PSTN) wall jack to make land line calls—from the same

cordless phone. Up to 3 additional phones can be added—so you can replace your current cordless phones throughout your home with NETGEAR’s Dual-mode Cordless Phone with Skype.

Manage your contact list and see who’s available to talk to. Use premium services like SkypeIn, SkypeOut, Skype Voicemail (additional fees apply). Supports up to 4 handsets per household (additional handsets sold separately). DECT Cordless–ideal for long range and clear voice quality and Multiple Languages Supported. Nice interactive video here  and you could purchase it also if you like from Skype.

Yes, it had to be done as much as I love my laptop you just can not get away from the fact that you need some sort of cordless phone glued to your ear, well my wife does anyway.  No way was I going to start using the devil money hoard Belgacom for landline service so I started researching cordless VOIP (voice over internet protocol) phones.  This is the one I purchased and recommend it fully after my research and the many reviews SPH200D Amazon Reviews that I read confirm that it is the best for me and you. My SPH200D purchase with my Dell preferred account and it cost me $160.95 with free shipping and included a $20 mail in rebate.

If you are still paying those high landline prices then stop it because it’s a waste of money and it is stupid if you have Broadband, ADSL, or Cable. I was stupid for to long and have paid 1000s for phone calls but not anymore. So say F off to those phone companies and follow my lead if you have not already. Oh I will post one more pic when it’s delivered.

Make Money

The title of my article is merely me testing out posting an article (SEO) with my anchor selection make money to see how much it helps my ratings for the searches of Google. I’m no SEO expert but all I can really say that I am in a learning process and I know that others are using keyword anchors and becoming successful in their search rankings from Google.

I have a suspicion that SE’s like Google  have well over a hundred factors that determine the ranking of sites such as the outbound and inbound links.

From experience I can say that the titles (tags) of your articles are very important and when the keywords are searched you will receive more hits depending on the title of your article. An excellent tool to use for monitoring your keyword progress, page views, and just over all performance of your site is Google Analytics and it’s free.

I’ve been using it from the start of my blogging hobby and it has prove very useful in this area.  As you can see from the screen shot that I’ve uploaded I had 285 page views for 20-3-2007 with a 67.24% return visitor ratio.  Since I know my return visitor ration I therefore know that my readers must like what I am doing so far.  The software also gives a breakdown percentage of where the page views are coming from which is nice to know also. If you are not using Analytics you can sign in by using your Google account or sign up if you do not have a google account, it’s been a great help for me so far.

Google analytics helps you identify the keywords, ads, referrals, and campaigns that contribute the most to your bottom line. Learn how visitors interact with your website and identify the navigational bottlenecks that keep them from completing your conversion goals. Find out how profitable your keywords are across search engines and campaigns. Pinpoint where your best customers come from and which markets are most profitable to you. Google Analytics gives you this and more through easy-to-understand visually enhanced reports.

Guidelines from a SEO perspective include; to many links can be frowned on by SE’s, keep them relevant – similar to your site, appropriate keywords (anchor text) and links from high rankings sites will all have an impact according to the principals of SEO.  My opinion for me is that I only follow two principals choosing an appropriate keyword that I want to be searched for and keeping it somewhat relative – all bloggers.  I also like the idea of having all high ranking sites linking to me because I know that will have a definite impact on traffic but the fact is that not all high ranked sites like me yet.
