My Site Changed Locations in Google
This is the question my wife asked me this weekend and did I do anything to her site. As you may know, Google’s search results change regularly as they update their index. When Google adds new sites and incorporates the updates to the content of existing pages, pages in their search results shift. Some will be ranked higher than before for a particular keyword and others lower.
Occasionally, fluctuation in ranking could be due to differences in Google’s data centers. Basically when you perform a Google search, your query is sent to a Google data center in order to retrieve search results. Google has numerous data centers, and many factors (such as geographic location and search traffic) determine where a query is sent. Because not all of our data centers are updated simultaneously, it’s possible to see slightly different search results depending on which data center handles your query.
Guidelines for Better Results:
- Relevant sites linking to you
- Submit to relevant directories
- Clear hierarchy and text links
- Check for broken links and correct HTML
- Create a robots.txt file
- Pages for users not search engines
- Avoid Hidden text or hidden links
- Do not create duplicate content on subdomains
Therefore Google can not guarantee that any page will rank consistently in their search results, or even be included at all for that matter. If you are interested there are webmaster guidelines that can be followed to better index your site.

Constructive Criticism:
The layout is straight forward two column layout in which I like and use myself. The top menu bar functions well with one exception I was never able to get back to the main site (home). My suggestion would be to combine the (ask a question) and (submit a tip) into a contact button and in the contact section update the contact form with a drop down menu with those choices and more. Since those two buttons are now only taking one space a (home) button can now be added and the layout will not be jeopardized. Just two more items; the adsense links unit I would move it into the side tool bar and I also noticed that the Technorati search in the tool bar was exceeding past the outer right border.
Over all Mac OS X Tips blog has a wealth of knowledge and I would recommend it to any Mac user!

Google Supplemental Index Problems
Nathan Metzger of Not So Boring Life has a very interesting article that I found through Chow’s site about getting your blog out of the google supplement index. According to Nathan back in April Chris Garett did a great article on supplemental index problems that he was having on his Wordpress blog.
Supposedly the Google supplement Index is where the undeserving pages go in the end. The first step in taking care of this problem is downloading the Firefox browser if you do not have it and then downloading the SEO for Firefox plugin.
What is the Supplemental Index?
Lots of SEO masters believe that content that isn’t worthy ends up in the supplemental index. While this is certainly true, if you’re running a wordpress blog it is more likely that you’re simply dealing with duplicate content issues. If you make a post today on a default wordpress setup, there are about 5 different URLs you could type in that would give you the exact same content.
After downloading the plugin just go to your site and then right click your site and select SEO for Firefox then Lookup this page. Now you should see a data window just like the screen shot above. According to the stats I have 2,960 pages in the supplemental index and according to Nathan this means I have a lot of duplicate content.
How can you reduce the number of supplemental pages? By using the robots.txt file you tell Google what it can and cannot index on your site. To get a better understanding of how to format the text file I used Nathan’s and Chow’s files as a starting base for mine. After you have completed the file just upload it into your root directory it’s that simple.
If you do not want to upload and configure the robots.txt file, Chris Garett offers an altertive method. Just add this code in your header template just above the title tag.

For now I have gone with the robots.txt because this is the recommendation by all SEO experts but maybe later down the road I may try the php script just to see what happens. Nathan has seen a 20% increase in traffic so I am hoping for the same. I will give update soon!

In fours years $90 million gain now that is making money online! I wonder if Google plans to replace or update Feedburner ads with something new, like gAdFeeds. Ja Kel Daily Update: The site is doing well just yesterday Technorati fixed my site’s listing error (Rank:19,206) and I managed to accept 10 campaign Review Me reviews this month, pays less but good for promoting your review me category! I am definitely not a money maker like Google but at-least I’m not an arrogant Jerk that ended up going bankrupt in the end.
